Our strategy
We position for opportunity.
Opportunity which has a probabilistic, uncertain outcome. Altai Capital is a thematic, event-driven investment strategy specialising in US equities. It identifies thematic cycles early, positions tactically around catalysts, and underwrites every position so that no single loss can dent the record.
The name
Named for the golden mountains.
The Altai Mountains rise where Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China meet, a range whose name is usually traced to the Turkic altın, meaning gold. It stands for the qualities we want in the work: patience, clear air and a long view.
The research, the monthly read on markets and the live record are all published on this site. The daily book runs on Altai Capital's own trading system, built in-house to run it.

The Altai Mountains
Six principles
How the portfolio is run.
- 01
Strategic Positioning in Thematic Cycles
Thematic trends drive the market's most powerful and sustained moves, often outpacing traditional valuation anchors. Altai Capital focuses on identifying these cycles early, whether in technology, macro shifts or sector rotations, and aligns capital to capture the structural repricing that follows. The Portfolio leverages data-driven models and discretionary foresight to participate in emerging leadership themes, compounding returns as narratives evolve from early adoption to broad participation.
- 02
Capitalising on Catalyst-Driven Market Repricing
Markets recalibrate most dramatically during events, when expectations and reality diverge. Altai Capital thrives in these moments of repricing, positioning tactically to capture high-velocity directional moves while maintaining disciplined risk control. The Portfolio systematically identifies pre-event accumulation and post-event drift patterns, enabling participation at key inflection points where price action reflects shifting market narratives.
- 03
Aggressive Downside Protection
Risk management at Altai Capital operates as a systematic first principle. Every trade undergoes rigorous underwriting to ensure that no single loss greatly impacts performance. The Portfolio systematically quantifies tail risk relative to a security's typical overnight behaviour, positioning size accordingly when major catalysts loom. Additionally, index futures serve as a dynamic hedge against broad market dislocations while enabling rapid re-entry during rebounds, preserving capital during drawdowns.
- 04
Positioning for Opportunity through Convexity
Conviction is built statistically, but outcomes are inherently probabilistic. Altai Capital focuses on entering high-quality set-ups with measured risk, knowing that frequent participation in statistically favourable scenarios compounds edge over time. By systematically underwriting positions and allowing catalysts to drive unexpected upside, the Portfolio maximises exposure to positive convexity, creating the conditions where luck becomes repeatable through disciplined process.
- 05
Value, Market Efficiency and Mispricings
Market value is continuously reassessed as new information emerges, creating temporary inefficiencies across different time horizons. Altai Capital combines discretionary insight with quantitative discipline to exploit these windows, scaling into longer-term secular winners while capitalising on short-term dislocations before they normalise. This dual approach allows the strategy to compound value across both thematic cycles and transient pricing anomalies.
- 06
Structural Advantage through Speed & Scale
Altai Capital's compact size creates a structural edge that larger players cannot replicate. Operating below the threshold where position building moves markets allows the Portfolio to execute precision entries during periods of aggressive event repricing, capturing dislocations before institutional capital can respond. This velocity advantage enables systematic front-running of lagging institutional flows, particularly during post-catalyst windows when mispricings are most pronounced and time-sensitive.
